5 Cheap Thailand Activities

**This is a Guest Post**

Thailand is considered to be one of the top destinations in Asia, and one of the most cost-effective for visitors due to its plethora of budget-friendly activities, attractions, and shopping opportunities. Here, you can spend many a day surrounded by turquoise waters and warm beach sand, or take to the cities and explore the local culture.

1. Market Mayhem
The busy markets of Thailand are well-known, and you can get almost anything under the sun from within one. Items on sale vary from fresh fruit and toys, to a three-piece formal suit that’s tailored to fit – and it’s free to wander around and watch others bargain. One note to those who are new to haggling – do some research on the average sales price of certain items, so you don’t get ripped off, and so you don’t rip off the stall owner – they’re trying to make a living after all. If you’re after a unique market destination, take a water taxi to the Taling Chan Floating Market. A word of caution is that the Thai’s will vary their asking price, depending on which nationality you are – so if they think you’re from Australia, they’ll usually charge you double, whereas if they think you’re South African, the price is usually halved.

2. Beach Baby

With such a vast variety of beaches to go to, it can be hard to decide which you’d like to set foot on first. One of the most lauded areas to head to, which was shown in the film “The Beach” with Leonardo Di Caprio in the early 2000s, is Maya Bay in Phi Phi. It’s one of the best diving sites available in Thailand and the crystal waters, snow white sand, and some sunblock, are all you need for a great day out. There are three beaches here, with the longest being 200m. You may have to pay a small entrance fee as this is a National Park, which you are then welcome to wander through.

3. History

Within the Sukothai Historic Park, visitors will get the chance to view a variety of ruins from the original capital city of Sukhothai, which was the Siamese seat of power in the 13th century. Sukothai translated means “Dawn of Happiness”. The slowly crumbling architecture showcases the start of the Thai style, and the various carved pillars, ornate friezes, and Buddha’s are still in a good condition, many still bearing traces of the original brightly-coloured paint flecks. The admission price to the park costs a mere $2, and you can spend a full day exploring on foot or biking between, the numerous points of interest.

4. Head to the Top
The western parts of Thailand, like Kanchanaburi Province, are an outdoor paradise characterised by lush forests, waterfalls, streams, and hiking trails. For those who are looking for a full-day trip, the Erawan Waterfall and Srinakarin Lake Tour are recommended. Here, you can swim in clear waters to revive yourself after a tiring hike through the jungle, as the sound of the waterfall echoes around you and lulls you back into a state of calm.

5. Cultural Stops

For those looking to enter one of the gorgeously ornate Buddhist temples, head to Chiang Mai where there are over 300 shrines and temples. Most are free of charge, provided you stay quiet and respectful of the monks – you’re entering their holy space after all. While here, take some time to appreciate the gorgeous gildings and decorations as you walk through the various rooms and chambers.

Hotel Review: Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square

On our recent trip to Bangkok, we stayed at Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square. I chose this hotel because of its location and its price.

If you’ve been following this blog, you’d know that we almost always stay at Centara Grand at Central World whenever we are in Bangkok. We’ve been to Bangkok six times and this is the second time we stayed in a different hotel.

The first hotel we stayed at other than Centara Grand was at Emporium Suites.  It was okay but the location wasn’t really suited to our purpose at that time. We were there to go shopping and while there’s a mall – Emporium Mall connected to the hotel, nothing beats shopping at Siam area.

I told myself that if we’re going to Bangkok again, I’ll book Centara or another hotel that’s within the same area.

For this trip, I decided to book Novotel because the rate is cheaper compared to Centara or any other hotel within that area.

I booked a standard room. It was okay but the aircon smell was “smoky”. EJ started coughing and I started to have migraine. I told my husband, we couldn’t stay in the room.

So I asked the front office if they have another standard room we could transfer that does not have a smoky atmosphere. They showed us another standard room on a higher floor and an executive premier room.

When EJ saw the executive premier room, he said “I want to move in to this room!” I was hesitant because we had to pay an additional 1,400 Baht or roughly $47/night.

The Executive Premier Room at Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square. We did not bring the SLR so I only took photos using my iPhone. Some shots were blurred and this was the only decent picture I have.

In the end I was convinced the additional payment was worth it. Here are the reasons:
1) Room is huge.
2) Has two sofa sets and two flat screen TVs
3) Access at the Premier Lounge (free drinks from 6am-10pm and free cocktails from 5-7pm everyday)

After the upgrade, we were pretty pleased with everything else – good buffet selection, friendly staff and easy access to Siam Paragon.

I think I found another favorite hotel to stay in Bangkok.

Hotel Review: Emporium Suites, Bangkok

Hi! I haven’t been writing here as often as I would like to because life is just getting hectic nowadays. And we also just came back from a short 5-day break from Bangkok.

Bangkok is always fun – the food and the shopping. And in this particular trip we got a little dose of both.

We stayed in two different hotels because we were supposed to just stay there for 3 days but hubby wanted to stay a bit longer so I booked another hotel for our extended stay.

For the first three days we stayed at Emporium Suites in Sukhumvit area. It’s a 5-star serviced apartment and I guess that’s the reason why the rooms are bigger. I booked a 1 bedroom suite and that’s exactly what we got.

big space

bed
The bed is king size. And it’s just perfect for the three of us.

flat tv
They have a flat TV

dining table
They have a little dining table with a plate of fresh fruits daily

Kitchen
And the kitchen is equipped with all the cooking paraphernalias.

I like the place because it is huge. It is perfect for a family staying in Bangkok for a week or more. The rate that I got also included the buffet breakfast. While the breakfast was sufficient, don’t expect for a 5-star buffet spread.

I also like that the hotel/serviced apartment is attached to a mall called Emporium Mall which is right in front of a train station.

Will we stay there again? Probably. But for a shopping trip, I still highly recommend Centara Grand at Central Mall because it’s connected to a mall – Central Mall, which is bigger than Emporium, which means more choices for shopping.

Having said that, we truly enjoyed our stay at Emporium Suites.

Booked for Bangkok next month

We are so lucky here in Cambodia that we get to enjoy so many holidays. For the working class like us, this is the time to catch up on books, family time, travel or simply to relax.

Next month, there’s a five-day holiday here in Cambodia and we are taking advantage of it. We are going to Bangkok. Yay!

We have been to Bangkok several times. So this trip is purely for relaxation and a little shopping.

I am excited because we will be staying in a different location and different hotel this time. We used to stay in Centara Grand at Central World Hotel all the time. It was very convenient for us. We loved that hotel. In fact, I think it is the best hotel to stay in Bangkok! But this time, I thought of trying out other location and another hotel.

After a little research, I finally booked our stay at Emporium Suites Bangkok. It’s a 55sqm studio room with a kitchenette and dining area.

What sold me to this hotel is the fact that it is on top of the shopping mall called Emporium Shopping Centre! It’s very convenient to our purpose.

Let’s see if the above pictures are as good in reality. I can’t wait!

Best Hotel to stay in Bangkok

In my humble opinion, Centara Granda at Central World Hotel is one of the best hotel to stay in Bangkok.

We have stayed three times in this hotel and I can say that I have never been let down. The location is great! The service is excellent. The rooms are huge and in tip top shape. Most importantly the rate is competitive.

Centara Grand @ Central World Hotel is a perfect place when shopping is your main agenda in Bangkok. It sits atop Central World Shopping Mall and walking distance to Siam Paragon Mall. But more than the location, what I love most is their service.

I remember, EJ was sick on our third stay there. I got a call from their guest services asking if EJ was okay. And then 10 minutes later, someone was on our door with a get well soon card and a rubiks cube for EJ. That was really thoughtful of them. I wish all hotels are like that.

It’s also worth mentioning that the bathroom is huge with a very nice rain shower head. I totally loved it.
